Calling, Tweaking, and Blacking Out

At The Horn Book blog “Calling Caldecott” there is attention, appreciation, and medal speculation for two Book Maker’s Dozen titles: Blackout, by John Rocco, and Tweak Tweak, written by Eve Bunting, illustrated by Sergio Ruzzier.

Congratulations, John and Sergio, and good luck!

Sergio Ruzzier and Tweak Tweak at Books of Wonder

This Saturday, June 18th, from 12 to 2, Sergio Ruzzier will be at Books of Wonder in NYC to talk about Tweak Tweak and sign copies of the book. There will also be other authors and illustrators: Javaka Steptoe, Chris Raschka, Greg Foley, and Teresa E. Harris.

Congratulations, Sergio!

Congratulations to Sergio Ruzzier for his selection as one of this year’s Sendak Fellows! From what I can gather this is the second year of Sendak Fellowships. Apparently they involve a month in Connecticut with the Man himself and three other lucky fellow fellows. If that’s not exactly what the fellowship is, I hope Sergio will correct me. Anyway, I think it’s close, and it sounds, obviously, fantastic. The honor and opportunity couldn’t go to a more deserving artist. I expect he’ll make great use of it. Let’s just hope he remembers his old friends here in Brooklyn. We will be expecting postcards, Sergio.

Above: Tweak Tweak, Sergio’s next book, with text by Eve Bunting, coming in May.

Picture Book Lists at sergioruzzier.blogspot.com

I'd like to invite anyone who loves picture books to send me a list with ten of their favorite picture books, for kids or not. The books can be from any time and any country. I'd like to keep the definition of picture book as wide as possible. For example, one of my books will probably be William Steig's The Agony in the Kindergarten, which was a collection of one-liners illustrated in black&white, about but not exactly for kids.
You can be an author, an illustrator, an editor, an art director, a bookseller, a librarian, an agent, or anyone who has a passion for picture books.
Please send me your list with, if you want, a mini-bio, a picture of you, and a link that I can add to the post. And any comment on the books you choose. Send to sergio(at)ruzzier(dot)com

Thank you!

P.S.: this of course doesn't want to compete with Betsy Bird's amazing Top 100 Picture Book Poll.
